What are AC gearmotors?

Using an alternating current, AC gearmotors convert speed and torque. Depending on the application you’re using your AC gearmotor for, it can slow down the speed of the motor, while at the same time transmitting higher torques than an electrical motor alone.

What are the different types of AC gearmotors?

Unlike DC gearmotors that can be both brushed and brushless, all AC gearmotors are brushless. This means they don’t have a commutator with ‘brushes’ which wear down over time. An AC gearmotor therefore is more durable.

• Induction AC gearmotor - Typically used in kitchen appliances, automobiles and industrial machinery, induction AC gearmotors have an output rotation speed that is proportional to its applied frequency of the alternate current.
• Shade pole AC gearmotor - A single-phase squirrel pole AC gearmotor uses an auxiliary winding composed of either a copper ring or bar, called a shading coil. Unlike standard squirrel cage motors, they are suited for multiple speeds and are often used in fans.
• Synchronous AC gearmotor – Because the speed of the rotor is proportional to the stator, synchronous AC gearmotors are used where accuracy is an important factor, such as clocks and timers.
